Sustainable design is not a trend—it has been part of our professional philosophy for decades.
Principal Architect Rafael G. Chan became one of the Philippines' early Certified BERDE Professionals (PH-CBP-00303), reinforcing RG Chan & Associates' commitment to environmentally responsible architecture and long-term building performance.
Rather than presenting sustainability as an optional feature, RG Chan & Associates has long viewed environmental responsibility as an essential part of good architecture. Long before green building became a common requirement, our practice was already incorporating climate-responsive planning, efficient building systems, and resource-conscious design into projects throughout the Philippines.
BERDE (Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence) is the Philippine Green Building Rating System developed by the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC). It evaluates projects based on environmental performance, energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, materials, site sustainability, and long-term operational performance.
BERDE certification provides an independent benchmark for environmentally responsible buildings while encouraging better design decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
To become a Certified BERDE Professional, participants first complete the intensive BERDE Professional Basic Training conducted by TÜV Rheinland and the Philippine Green Building Council.
Certification requires passing a comprehensive 200-question professional examination covering sustainable design principles, BERDE assessment categories, environmental regulations, building performance, and certification procedures.
The qualification demonstrates the professional capability to guide clients through the BERDE certification process and integrate sustainable strategies into building projects.
Certification is valuable only when supported by real project experience.
RG Chan & Associates applies sustainable design principles across commercial, institutional, hospitality, residential, and planning projects by emphasizing:
• Climate-responsive architecture
• Energy-efficient building systems
• Water conservation
• Sustainable material selection
• Healthy indoor environments
• Long-term operational efficiency
• Responsible site planning
Every project seeks an appropriate balance between environmental responsibility, construction practicality, operating cost, and long-term value for the client.
Owners increasingly recognize that sustainable buildings are also better investments.
Environmentally responsible design can help reduce operating costs, improve occupant comfort, increase property value, support ESG objectives, and prepare developments for evolving environmental standards.
Our objective is not simply to pursue certification, but to design buildings that perform better throughout their entire lifecycle.
Sustainability continues to shape the design philosophy of RG Chan & Associates.
The knowledge gained through BERDE Professional certification complements decades of architectural experience, allowing our firm to deliver projects that are practical, environmentally responsible, and designed for long-term performance.
Let us help you integrate sustainable design strategies that improve building performance, reduce operating costs, and create lasting value.
